Hey guys,

Was just wondering what uni friends networks are about these days, they seem to spreading like the plague!

So far i count... myspace, Facebook, Faceparty, xuqa and some others i forget the name of!

It's getting crazy!

There's one where it emails everyone on the persons MSN contact list. I have around 20 tags (emails) per day and it's getting annoying. :o

i hate these things, only good thing about them is finding bands

Yeah that's the only reason why I use myspace. Facebook is where everything else is done for me.

Myspace needs to be burnt :(

Its a place where spammers thrive off of people that dont know how to use the internet safely because they dont have much knowledge about computers and whats bad and whats good on the internet.

There are so many.

I hate it when I get loads of e-mails telling me that "my good friend [insert name]" has joined yet another stupid website and they want me to join and also to give my birthday so that it can go on their special calendar. (The worst part is that I rarely know the people the e-mails refer to). :p

I really dislike MySpace to be perfectly honest; I will go on MySpace pages for people I know, but I find them awful. They tend to be devoid of taste, and have awful things on them.

(As soon as I see a lot of them, I think, "I really don't need to immediately see what your results on the personality IQ test [or whatever it is called] were, especially if they add about 30 lines onto the page, thus making me have to scroll yet further to get to the bottom").

One thing I hate to see is where people basically copy a really, really, really bad design and it has some code in which links the large region from which one might follow links to pictures or videos, to some other website which has a strange URL, or just a random IP address. I seem to see this more and more now.

I don't get why loads of people sign up to every site, then add all the same friends. Its like chatting on mobile phones to the person sitting next to you.

Yes, this perplexes me also.

It is strange in my Applied Business class at school, we have about 3 weeks to finish a piece of coursework that is one third of the two GCSE grades awarded. People still decide that going on what seems to be every social networking site available is more important. The people who sit to my left spend the whole lesson talking to each other on some form of online instant messenger (Meebo I think  ), and they also take great pleasure in viewing all the images on every single friend they have on these social networking websites on a browser resized to (I am not joking) around 350 pixels by 350 pixels (simply so the teacher will not see them).

I find it rather amusing to be honest that these people prefer to look at pictures they have already seen than get two decent grades.

I personally don't understand why people use these websites, can someone explain please?

I use myspace for finding bands and listning to friend's bands - that site is shockingly bad though.

I use Bebo for catching up with friends from Home and seeing what they're up to these days

I use Facebook for organising half of my uni social life and seeing all the photos from the weekend.

texts cost me 10p - facebook's much easier.

also - MSN just can't handle big conversations that people can drop in and out of easily, facebook can and it's really easy to use.

Trust me just because you waste a lot of time in lessons doesnt mean you cant come out with a top grade ;)

Well considering there are 3 people in my class who got above a C grade in the exam, and I believe 2 or 3 people with above a C grade in the coursework, they aren't looking at getting the "top grade" you speak of. (All this information is gathered by simply listening to people, so there is no guarantee of how correct it is [although I can say that I am confident that it is correct to ±1 person]).

To be fair, it is a difficult class, but shouldn't that mean that people would work harder?

you're spending half your time on ocuk forums and not doing the coursework or studying. ;)

I'm up-to-date. In fact, I decided to do more work (while on holiday) in order for me to have free time now.

I have already done the exam in the subject so I don't need to study it.

think there one called 'Tagged'

Ive been 'tagged' by quite a few people and I think they are trying to copy off facebooks picture tagging thing to make you think its facebook or something.

I hate all social networking sites, just a tool to help people inflate their egos. HOWEVER I have recently succumbed to facebook, because I think it's slightly different as its not their to allow you to talk about how cool and misunderstood you are and how you listen to 546564 different bands, its mainly about sharing pics from last night and organising events easily which is cool.

I think blitz2163 was talking generally rather than specifically about your class, you can mess around in class (particularly in school ar GCSE/standard grade level) and still walk away with the top grades. I know I wasn't paying attention in about half the classes and still did alright at that level. :)

For the original question, I don't know what social networking sites are popular just now except for when I keep getting sent emails asking me to join friend "X" who has tagged me or whatever. I simply don't see the point, anyone who I want to keep in contact with generally has my phone number or MSN. I see no reason why I should provide my details all for free on a social networking website when companies pay good money to get them from other sources (and then I tell them to get lost but that is beside the point). ;)

you mean it's a social networking site that gets used for social networking???

I've been using facebook for a few weeks and I like it, its like a thinking man's MySpace, I like how you get a rundown of what your contacts are up to and it usually only lets you add friends from your email account, school or work (or via other friends) rather than adding the world and his mum for the sake of it.
