Hi there,

I make media PCs for people all the time and now I want to experiment for myself using differnt software. I have done Media Portal that was easy and I now want to try a Linux version adn the first thing that came to mind was MythTV.

I am a complete beginner to Linux and the only thing I have ever dont related to Linux was boot a Knoppix CD, which I only had to press Enter to do :), but my guess is that is isn't going to be that easy.

I have been reading through the MythTV documentation (skim reading) and I have no idea what the hell its talking about with federa cores etc....I have just learnt that a front end is the user interface and the backend was the code, is that right? :|

What do i need to do to setup MythTV?

Thanks...

Hi there,

Do differnt distros running myth tv take differnt hardware requirements as that is one of the other things i am investigating.

I have used Ubuntu before, I remember as I had it installed on a laptop so I will try that.

Thanks....

Hi there,

Thanks for that guide.

For those who have used MythTV on Ubuntu, what do you think the minimum spec for it would be for full functionality, but with only one tv card.

Thanks...

[EDIT]

Also, will i be able to get my music and video collection onto the hard disk and some of my AVIs require codecs, can i get those codecs?

I just found this torrent. I imagine it works as I found it on del.icio.us. I'm attempting to download it at this moment in time.

EDIT: It's now downloading at 700 KiB/s. Once I'm fully established I'll be uploading at 1.25 MiB/s.

700KB/s :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

What connection do u have to get that fast!!!!

I currently am downloading at an average of 150KB/s so im fine with that.

Hi there,

Yes I am using knoppmyth at the moment, but I want to be able to overcome problems in this before I move on to more complex things.

The problem that I have at the moment is that DVDs are playing slow.

Here is what i get when I run the hdparm command on the secondary master (hdparm /dev/hdc)

hdparm of dvd drive said:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid Argument
IO_Support = 1
unmaskirq = 0
using_dma = 1
keepsettings = 0
readonly = 0
readahead = 256
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid Argument

What am I doing so wrong that the dvds play slow?

Thanks...

Hi there,

I tryed changing the DVD Drive to a later DVD Drive and that didn't work.

Am I supposed to be installing any drivers because I havent?

Thanks...

I am now trying to get a dvd to play in ubuntu before I continue and install MythTV.

This time the dvd won't even play, I have tried different dvds and different media players and it just wont work.

Any ideas?

Thanks...
