Hi there,

I make media PCs for people all the time and now I want to experiment for myself using differnt software. I have done Media Portal that was easy and I now want to try a Linux version adn the first thing that came to mind was MythTV.

I am a complete beginner to Linux and the only thing I have ever dont related to Linux was boot a Knoppix CD, which I only had to press Enter to do :), but my guess is that is isn't going to be that easy.

I have been reading through the MythTV documentation (skim reading) and I have no idea what the hell its talking about with federa cores etc....I have just learnt that a front end is the user interface and the backend was the code, is that right? :|

What do i need to do to setup MythTV?

Thanks...

The first thing you're going to need to do is pick a distribution of Linux to begin with. Unlike Windows, there are a bunch of different Linux packages from which you can choose. They all are based on the Linux kernel but include other software such as GUIs, web browsers, setup tools, and the like. Fedora Core is the development branch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a well established but more hardcore distro. Ubuntu is very popular on this forum so I think you couldn't go wrong picking that.

Once you've got the operatinbg system installed, you can go into greater depth with the MythTV setup.

You can learn a lot about Linux by just reading a few Wikipedia articles about things that sound unfamiliar. ;)

Hi there,

Do differnt distros running myth tv take differnt hardware requirements as that is one of the other things i am investigating.

I have used Ubuntu before, I remember as I had it installed on a laptop so I will try that.

Thanks....

Hi there,

Thanks for that guide.

For those who have used MythTV on Ubuntu, what do you think the minimum spec for it would be for full functionality, but with only one tv card.

Thanks...

[EDIT]

Also, will i be able to get my music and video collection onto the hard disk and some of my AVIs require codecs, can i get those codecs?

Server install comes with no GUI (unless you install one yourself).

Just looking at that guide, it's pretty complicated for a beginner so I recommend, if you have any further problems, taking a look at ubuntuforums.org, as there lots more people on there with lots more knowledge about linux.

Regarding the hardware requirements, I imagine that's got more to do with the kernel then the actual distro.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I've never really experimented with MythTV before :(

This was posted by another member of this forum some months ago (sorry, forgot who), scroll down to episode 2, should be quite useful for info. I haven't tried MythTV yet but I'd like to eventually :)

Was just about to post this. It's a must-watch if you're considering MythTV :)

I just found this torrent. I imagine it works as I found it on del.icio.us. I'm attempting to download it at this moment in time.

EDIT: It's now downloading at 700 KiB/s. Once I'm fully established I'll be uploading at 1.25 MiB/s.

I think that's the latest version (i.e. R5B7) :) For more info you could also checkout Knopmyth at distrowatch and the Knopmyth homepage.

I would recommend looking at KnoppMyth, having just installed R5B7 myself it was fairly straight forward and there's plenty of help on their forums and IRC along with a Wiki :D

That speed is from my torrent server hidden away in a server room at work. The whole place has something to the effect of a T3 fiber line. I'm limited by the 10 Mbit switches in my area. as a result I am always at 1.25 MiB/s or slightly above in terms of my overall upload speed. I'm uploading a few dozen Linux and BSD distros (no copyright infrimgement). To date I've uploaded over 15 TiB. :p

Hey there,

Right we are in business I think, but there is problems.

I need a TV card which is compatible with this and is digital?....anyone know of one?

Also when I play a DVD it plays slow and droops frames? Why is this.

Spec:

512MB RAM

Thanks...
