Evening all :)

Basically I'm just after a few tips to get my computer running a bit better because at the moment it seems pretty slow.

I'm by no means retarded but would like some help. Bit of background:

XP2000+
FX5700
700-odd meg of 2700 ram.
40gig HDD with 14gig spare (recently cleared up :o).

Now years of neglect has left it a mess, short of doing a complete reinstall what can I do to bring the old girl back to life?

I've just done a defrag and I'm trying to do a "Disk Cleanup" thingy but it doesn't seem to do much, kinda hangs but doesn't...

I'm not sure what I'm expecting here.. so if you have any ideas just throw them at me :)

Cheers ;)

Best you can do, is run defrag, disk cleanup as you suggested and run all the other Windows diagnostic tools. Get yourself a free version of the adware and spyware removal programs, and uninstall rarely used applications. :)

With all that effort, I'd prefer a reinstallation of Windows. :p There are many tools out there which will do the above in package suites... perhaps cleaning up invalid registry entries may help and cleaning up those common Windows errors.

Mmm I know I really should just reinstall Windows but the thought of that makes me cry :(

What would be involved exactly?

Cheers ;)

Doing a bit of backup on some removable storage, as a complete format would involve losing everything. :) But try the other suggestions first if you have a lot on disk.
