Hi all,
Hopefully this is in the right forum section... Trying to sort out some NAS for parents' home network, which needs to do 3 things, in order of descending importance:
1. Back-up data, mainly dad's in-house office PC but also other's laptops.
2. Allow occasional access to said data via internet
3. Potentially stream media wirelessly to an upgraded sound system in the future.
We've simply used an ext USB drive on dad's PC for backup till now. We're about to buy a new router however - Asus DSL N55U - since the current one needs upgrading, and we were assuming we'd simply plug the USB drive into the router and do things that way. Gbridge has been recommended as free software to manage this.
Is there any advantage (and if so, what is it) in buying a 'dedicated' external drive like the Seagate GoFlex Home, or buying a NAS box thingy and a new hard drive? We're trying to keep costs down, bearing in mind that the main function is simple back-up, but if something is worthwhile...
Thanks for any advice!
