Hi all,

Hopefully this is in the right forum section... Trying to sort out some NAS for parents' home network, which needs to do 3 things, in order of descending importance:

1. Back-up data, mainly dad's in-house office PC but also other's laptops.
2. Allow occasional access to said data via internet
3. Potentially stream media wirelessly to an upgraded sound system in the future.

We've simply used an ext USB drive on dad's PC for backup till now. We're about to buy a new router however - Asus DSL N55U - since the current one needs upgrading, and we were assuming we'd simply plug the USB drive into the router and do things that way. Gbridge has been recommended as free software to manage this.

Is there any advantage (and if so, what is it) in buying a 'dedicated' external drive like the Seagate GoFlex Home, or buying a NAS box thingy and a new hard drive? We're trying to keep costs down, bearing in mind that the main function is simple back-up, but if something is worthwhile...

Thanks for any advice!

I personally would go for a single bay nas enclosure as often they are better specced, have infinately better software and offer much more flexibility and features. It is worth the excess imho. It will also be much faster using gigabit ethernet as opposed to usb, even though that would be connected straight to the router.

I would say something like THIS

How much faster would a Synology DS112j be than a Seagate GoFlex Home, both connected via gigabit ethernet ?

I appreciate the software and features would be better than the Seagate but how much faster ?

Yes, I think that question was somewhere in my subconsciousness, just unformed as yet... :)

I've since been having a bit more of a look online, and the Seagate seems to have a few negative reviews about speed. However WD's My Book Live - which does the same sort of thing - seems very well reviewed, and there's a difference of well over £100 between buying that or the DS112j + hd. Does anyone have any experience of similar kit?

Personally I have reviewed a lot of nas units and so far nothing has beaten a qnap or synology. Speeds are subjective I grant that. It depends a lot on setup etc but you only have to look at the reviews the seagate one gets to see how bad it is.

As for the price difference. Thats up to you. Not only do you get a well made product with performance that in my opinion outclasses the seagate/wd, you get frequent updates as needed, lots of features and options and they quite frankly are very easy to use.

Well, you gave me the final push... went for the Synology 112j + seagate 1TB green. Regrettably both were somewhat cheaper - the hd very much so - on a certain rainforestry competitor...
