n00b question

hi guys

can anyone tell me what 'overrun' means in car terms

thanks.

Overrun conditions occur when the momentum of the vehicle causes the engine to turn faster than it would have been otherwise. The faster turning engine is trying to take in air that corresponds to the speed at which it is turning. The air intake is partially restricted by the throat valve. This results in a high vacuum that forms in the inlet manifold.

This help? :D

I always heard that term used when a car continued to run for a bit when the ignition was turned off back when we had carbs on cars.

Nah, that's "running on" or "dieseling"

Overrun is when you, for instance, boot it in second up to high revs, and then instead of changing up you just lift off the throttle (don't dip the clutch)
That's what being "on the overrun" is.
