Hello,
Am i right in presuming the gps part of the phone talks to a satelite for free? What I would like to get for my N95 when it arrives is the best satnav, I have seen garmin, tomtom, nokia maps etc but I am unsure which one I can use with voice directions without being charged for the priveledge. Basically what satnav software is free to use in regards to operating costs.

I thought one of the satnav softwares has all the maps already on the phone so its not downloading them over the phone line etc? I believe one of these sat nav softwares offer the free speech too. As my phone will be pay as I go I do not want to be charged fior using the full package once i have paid for it.

imo TOMTOM is the better one although it does need some fiddling about to make it work with the internal GPS

Route66 and Garmin both work fine with Internal GPS but just don't compare to TOMTOM

Those above you need to buy the software but after that it's free to use

the maps that sometimes comes preloaded is the nokia maps, but you have to pay a subscription to use it for voice guidance iirc

Tomtom is a pain in the bum on the n95, you have to run other apps first and then set up the GPS every time you start tomom. Garmin just works.
Personally, I prefer the Garmin software anyway.

so you think tomtom is the better of all the satnav progs? Does it have free voice commands etc

yes, once you've purchased the tomtom software that's it, no more cost. but like like monkeyspank and i said it is a bit of a pain to get the internal gps working, but imo it's worth it

Been using TomTom for over a year now on my N95.

Not let me down yet and I must have covered 40,000+ miles in the last 12 months.

The speed camera alerts are pretty cool and voices can be customised if that is what you want.
