N95 - where are my smileys?

Just got an N95 and when I text I just have the old fashioned : ) instead of

Am I missing something really obvious but how do I enable them?

it doesnt support them, although there is a 3rd party app you can install to do this. i cant remember the name of it though.

Wow, I can't believe that a phone like the N95 doesn't support something that the average £10 PAYG phone does!!

Depends on the manufacturer i would have thought. My old SE phone supported them but my last 2 Nokias haven't, if anyone can remember the name or knows of a app please post, i wouldn't mind having them on again.

why does it matter? the recipent of the text will only see what their phone supports also

Because 99% of people that I text would have phones that are capable of showing proper smileys.

IT's not like they won't understand what : ) means. I don't like the smileys on my phone and on instant messaging services anyway.

Ive never had a nokia that shows smileys by default...3310/8310/n70/n73/6120c

the 6230i did. anyway since nobody else has bothered looking, the first name that came up on google was a-sms. its supposed to only work in hong kong or something, but no harm in trying it.

I did look and the only ones i found was the a-sms from Nokia, but wasn't sure about the Hong Kong thing. The other one was myasms, you have to pay for it but a 2 day trial is available. But everytime i've tried downloading it, it kept stopping. If u get a-sms down james let us know what its like please mate.

you can still use : ) even if your phone does not support it. when you text your friends which have phones that support smileys then it will come out as

on their phones

But when I get sent smileys I can't understand them, they just come out as :*) and stuff.
