woohoo my N97 was shipped today for next day delivery which means I'll get it tomorrow 18th June which is earlier than any official outlet including Nokia themselves !!!.

Nice. Let us know what you think. :)

BBC iPlayer for the N97 is highly recommended if you're looking to show off its capabilities.

Damn, the N97 is a nice phone, I've wanted one since I first saw them at the end of last summer. Unfortunately I'm still tied into my contract so won't be seeing one for a long time. :(

Well, I've had the N97 for a few days now and I'm loving it. I upgraded from an N95 and I can honestly say that this is a definite step up. The N96 wasnt really that much better than the N95 so that's why I skipped it.

Anyway - the phone isnt as big as you think once you have it in your hands and it's not that heavy. I'mn usd to carrying the N95 around in my coat pockets and this didnt feel any different. And it looks very slick - I have the black one and it does look cool for a Nokia.

Now, the touchscreen works very well - it took me some time to get used to it but I'm there now and I think it's great. Web browsing is a vast improvement over the N95 - the large wide screen is ideally suited to browsing websites and kinetic scrolling is great too. A quick double tap zooms in for you. I was also able to be quite accurate and pinpoint small links with my finger.

Now, my favourite feature is the home screen. It currently displays my 4 most popular contacts for direct dialling / texting etc, the Facebook gadget featuring the last 3 updates from friends, my calendar - telling me whats happening today or when the next event is, email : featuring the last 3 emails and some shortcoust to SMS, web etc. These things are an absolute marvel - think desktop widgets in Window Vista etc - it's pretty much the same.

Thre's a few problems with bugs etc but no show stoppers and I fully expect them to be addressed with updates soon.

Overall - if you like Nokia's then you'll love this phone. I went for the N97 after seeing the iphone 3GS specs. I may well get the next gen iphone (4 ?) if it's any good but for now I'm happy.

I'm not gonna give a full review as I'm no expert reviewer but if you have any specific questions then fire away.

Here's my current homescreen:

From top to bottom:

- Clock/date/profile
- Calendar (currently synced with Google Calendar)
- Shortcuts #1 (Messaging/Web/Google Maps/Music player)
- Shortcuts #2 (BBC iPlayer/Photos/Mail for Exchange)
- E-mail (GMail push via Nokia Messaging)
- Twitter (mavity app)

The music player, weather and BBC iPlayer widgets are all pretty cool too. I've gone for usefulness over flashiness though. :p

Its a shame there arent a few more options for the home screen on the 5800, I could do with a combination of the shortcuts and the contacts, rather than one or the other.

Really tempted by the N97, unless its been changed the only thing that really did my head in on the N95 and other Symbian based phones i've had was the lack of any file/folder management. Like when i went into the gallery i would have liked to have separate folders for different sets of pics, like nights out in one folder, family stuff in another etc. Instead you just get a whole load of photos in one big list you have to search through.

Will probably still get this phone though. ;)

The new Photos app on the N97 should please you then. You can arrange photos into albums and you can also tag photos (i.e. tag a photo as "night out").

how much did that set you back ?

the new iphone sim free is £999.99

MW

£499

My charger went pop last night so I'll be emailing a certain online company today and see what they can do.

Another issue is that the phone can be charged via USB but only on PCs that have had the full driver set installed. This rules out charging it at work or at home on a PS3 or BTVision box. Not good - I dont know why they have done this.

Still gripes aside - I'm still enjoying this phone. Eagerly awaiting new firmware for new features & bug fixes.
