yea it probably was, i just got that midi out of a folder titled van halen, i wonder if there are any differences that make that mid actually specific to van halen :|

The Kinks made it in 1964 I think, way before Van Halen... Dave Davies cut though his speaker cone with a razor blade to get the distortion required [/useless fact]

I always thought they loosened the EL34 valve because my Dads band used to do the same in the 60's. The only trouble was after 5 mins it could loosen all the way out.

Van Halens version slow downs after the solo so that DLR can do a few orgasms before going into the 3rd verse where The Kinks version goes straight into the 3rd verse from the solo.

EDIT -
I seem to remember that Jimmy Page actually played the riff on You Really Got Me - could be a myth.
