If a named driver on your insurance has an accident while driving your car (you as the policy holder were not involved in any way) does it affect the policy holders no claims if the driver makes a claim on the policy?

Yes, of course it does - the no claims go with the policy and a claim is made under the policy!

That being said, it won't affect the policy holder's premium for future years AFAIK, unless of course they keep that named driver on the policy, in which case the questions asking if any of the named drivers has had an accident obviously become relevant.

If a claim is made on the policy the future premium will rise regardless of who was driving. Even if a claim isn't made an accident report must still be made to the insurance company in case the third party make a claim. In which case the named drivers risk will be re-assessed and the policy cost almost certainly will go up.

Andi.

Ah well, this is gonna be depressing at renewal time. So much for the old idea of adding parents as named drivers to bring down the cost :p

Question is, when asked for doing quotes if it asks "have you have any claims in the past x years?" what would my answer be? Technically speaking I'm not claiming, the named driver is. Only contact with insurance i've had is to give permission for them to discuss it with the other person.

Doesn't matter, YOU have not had any claims and YOU have not had any accidents, and neither have YOU claimed on your policy. Your parent has (unless there's an unresolved dispute about who was driving come renewal time I suppose). Chances are they will also have their own 'named driver' no claims, which is lost, while your own 'proper' no claims remains intact.
If you add them as a named driver next year they may bring the cost up, but your premium should be unaffected.

Since it sounds like your insurance company is getting involved anyway, may as well call them to confirm that this is what will happen.
