It does look a bit 'shopped, but if you do a bit of reading about the pic and the competition itself it should clear up any doubt about its authenticity.

It probably looks " 'shopped" because it's a computer image I expect.

"false colour" so they put colours on it themselves, which make it look more like a "real" explosion, like a bomb =p

they look so small it looks like a screenshot for a game like command and conquer (not saying it is before anyone flames me - just saying it looks c&c style)

Thought it was just a photoshopped image for some competition until I read it was actually real. awesome!
