Nargh! External drive wont show in windows, and causes all programs to pause!?what?

I've got a caddy with a 160gb IDE>USB drive in, was working fine very new. but now when i connect to laptop make the windows device connected noise, but does not show under disk management. it also prevents any programs eg IE winamp etc from starting until it is disconnected! also when you pull out the usb cable - the drive apears in disc management for a fraction of a second before going away. i havent dropped, slapped or smaked the drive and it sounds normal on power up. whats the crack here?! i've a lot of data i need on it

I also have this problem, 160gb drive worked fine as a secondary drive in the pc, I put it into a usb caddy and when connected xp makes the connected device noise but the drive does not show in my computer?

The jumper is set correctly, the caddy is also showing a red light on the back and when you remove the usb cable from the notebook it changes to green?

I tried the program above but it didnt detect the drive?

any ideas?

does your external drive enclosure need power and usb or just usb? Maybe the cable is faulty, have you tried another?

Its power & USB, but power doesnt seem to be the problem as the disk spins up as it would normally?

It could be a dodgy USB cable, is it the one supplied with the caddy?

yes it is, i'll try a different one. Also I rang the company I bought it from to say it was faulty they said that is fine, its not worth us returning the product and refunded me in full.

try as the software scans the drives plugging it in at the right time, ie load then usb plug in.
