NAS backup to (multiple) external disks

I'm looking at upgrading my humble storage capacity to a NAS with around 12TB (give or take depending on raid config, formatting, etc.), and I'd like to back it up too. I haven't bought yet, but I have my eye on the qnap 8*9 range in terms of capabilities and price.

Tape's out of the question I think, as is cloud, and so I was considering backing up directly to disks (over usb/esata).

Does anyone do this currently? A nice full/incremental backup of a NAS, where the data size to backup far exceeds what would go onto a single disk, necessitating prompts and swapping when each is full?

I figured it would be all the rage by now but information seems scarcer than I expected it to be. The qnap devices do talk about backing up to external disk but I don't know if they only mean backing up SOME of the nas data to a single external disk, rather than backing up to multiple as necessary.

So those of you with monster NAS's and no tape libraries, do you do backups like this and if so how? I imagine an rsync/robocopy approach would be a nightmare, and was hoping to use something either built-in to qnap or something like acronis instead to do the job.
