Ive been asked by a friend to design and install a home entertainment system. The major issue i have is the music side of it.

Here is my intention

Synology NAS box

Multiple WD TV Live connected to older flat screen TV's

4 independant music areas fed by 4 squeezebox radio's, connected to teh NAS box. These are to be controlled by the Logitech remote app on either Android or iPhone

Budget is quite low, 3K (euro)

Currently the house is before the second fixing stage, cat 5 run throughout, and speaker cables.

my issues:

1. Will the squeeze boxes work? Are they the right solution? I saw something abouta Squeezebox Duet, but it seems to be discontinued

2. How to i connect my speakers to the Squeezebox Radios, they seem to only have a 3.5mm Stereo Headphone output? How would someone typicall distribute sound to multiple speakers?

3. Squeezebox Remote App. Is it ok to use?

Im a field service engineer, so i have no issues with the networking side of it, im putting in WiFi (N) throughout and a gig 24 port switch to connect everything. I just havent worked with AV equipment before and i want to get this right

Another vote for Sonos here.

I'd love to recommend Squeezebox, but for me and my customers there are just too many holes in what it offers. The biggest one is the continuing restriction about which NAS drives can be used because of the need to run the server software on something. Either that or you have to dedicate a PC to run 24/7 just to be ready when you want to play some music. Then there's the lack of a proper amplified zone player. I realise for many using only one player that this isn't an issue. But for proper multiroom in several zones then extra amps may well be needed, and that pushes up the space requirements, complexity (a little) and the cost.

Sonos hardware may cost a little more up front, but not having to shell out for a load of 3rd party extras to make a functioning system is a big benefit.

Come on Logitec, you've had long enough to get this sorted.

+1 For the Sonos here, add to it Napster for £5 a month and you never need buy another CD again. Just to add the controller in the clip is the old style, much nicer and totally touch screen now.

Running a Squeezebox Radio with a synology NAS (Which has a squeezebox addon) this works pretty well for what it cost me £85, but looking at what you want to do the squeezebox duet would have been ideal or look at the Logitech Squeezebox™ Touch which seems to be its replacement.

Saying that if cash wasn't an issue I would have gone the Sonos, but the cash saving and the fact the synology NAS works well with squeezebox, I'm very happy.

Out of interest does anyone know how powerful the Synology NAS is? Would it be capable of streaming multiple video feels and audio feeds at any given time?

I run a synology ds110 nas with a squeezebox classic controlled by a ipad with squeezepad software and it is awsome i highly recommend it.
If i were you i would by a synology nas connect up to router then in each room you want music put in a squeezebox classic connect that to a stereo amp with speakers and stream music wirelessly controlled by an ipad/ipod touch. Will work like a dream.

I just streamed an mp3 to my squeezebox while streaming a 720p rip to my blueray players via the synology djs110 nas.:D
So cant see any problem with multiple music streams.
Multiple video might struggle due to the rather low through put ie 5mb a second but thats typical from a low cost nas.
