My personal experience is that if you just want a simple network file store then a NAS is the way to go, if however you think you might want to make use of the device for other things then get a microserver.
I should have bought a microserver, there's too much faffing and hacking involved in getting the NAS to do other things for my liking.
I got a HP Microserver with the £100 cashback offer, it's excellent and we use it all the time. I more or less run it 24/7, it runs uTorrent and 99% of our data is stored on it. We've cut our PC HDDs down to just a Windows SSD and a single regular hard drive which was a big improvement on the amount before!
Since I bought it I've put 4x 2tb Samsung F4s in, plus a small HDD for the OS and run Windows Server 2008 R2. I bumped the memory up to 8gb and plan to run backups from there like the poster above, maybe install ESX and create a test domain for helping me with my MCITP.
maybe but can always experiment....lol...money isnt a issue either not looking for the cheapest way just the best way...looks like a microserver can be fun...rather than a normal nas box lol
