Im thinking of getting a NAS box to attach to the router so that all data is stored in one place and easy to back up.

would these run slower eg streaming a movie or similar ?

my network is 100mb cable and 54g wireless (soon to be 270mb wireless)

are there any disadvanages to usign NAS ?

which is better.. to get an enclosure and use my own drives or a ready built one?

thank you

well I bought a synology ds106j (had spare pata drives laying around) and it hits about 20mb/s transfer (most of the nas boxes are pretty similar speed wise) so assuming the wireless is connected at 54mb/s then there would be no issue.

Music can easily be streamed to more than one device, they only use about 1.5mb/s when using mp3, movies not so sure on as I have never used them.

As to whether a prebuilt or byod is better then I would say byod is better as then you get to pick the drive of choice and its easily upgraded later on if you ever need more. The benefits of just about all the byod (and some ready made) is they have ftp and web servers built in generally.

Disadvantages to NAS: itunes sometimes loses its database (not sure if its the nas or itunes) but other than that and the slower than internal speeds (expected) nothing that I can think of.
