NAS Hard Drive Advice

Hi Guys,

Im looking at adding a NAS to my network for storing the majority of my data on, streaming movies across the network and saving files from my IP camera to via FTP.

I have been looking at the DS216play as the NAS device I am going to use. I need four drive bays, although I will only be using two to start out with to save myself some money. I also need it to have low power draw the synology website states that this device only uses around 15watts when accessing data.

Is this device good value for money at around £360 without any drives? Are there any better options? (Dont mind spending more for future proofing)

If I buy just the caddy what are some decent HDD's to put in to start out with?

Im thinking around 3TB to 4TB without spending a fortune.

To be honest you be better off building one yourself with the money you spend on a off the shelf one you would get one built for half the price then it would cost you for a NAS with the drives your looking at £500 plus and that's not even transcoding for HD files. You could get a Quad core build cheaper and to transcode aswell if needed
 
Thanks for your replies. I was looking at building my own however power consumption for me must be very low which this prebuilt system provides. Would it be difficult to get similar results with a system I build myself?
 
I was looking at a Nas but i have an i5 4690 and is powerful little HTPC and the benchmark is quite good. So i decided to use my htpc as a server and just put two 5tb WD reds in and Raided them
 
If your not transcoding then why spend so much on a synology it can soon add up on a 4 bay with WD red. id get a 2 bay and get higher TB drives. There is a few options you could go. It all depends how much your Data means to you if it means a lot then 3 TB won't be enough. If your wanting to raid them. So you have backup options then your looking at 6 TB two 3 TB WD reds. Which will rattle the cost up
