Im thinking of going for one of the synology NAS enclosures.

Can some one recommend me a hard drive for it and is it better to go SATA or IDE?
Want about 300Gb

Cheers

If you're going to put the disk into the NAS box and leave it there then it doesn't really matter which you go for. However I'd be tempted to go SATA:

  • SATA drives are now cheaper than the IDE version of the same drive
  • You may struggle to find an IDE drive in 2-3 years time if you need to upgrade or replace a failed disk.

For a ~300Gb disk I'd be going for a 320Gb Seagate 7200.10

Agreed with above. Go for a DS-160e and Seagate 7200.10 320GB or WD3200KS.
Take a look at the price of the WD5000AAKS at the moment as these are a complete bargain.:)

slightly on/off topic :)
i just got one of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-000-DL
and it may be a tad noisy for the living room,a bit intrusive if playing a quiet scene off a movie for instance
also found out AFTER got it that it don`t use the NTFS file system ,it uses a linux ext2 or 3 :(
hope it (the nas)don`t break as i would have to install linux to get my files back

I built my own one :D. P3 Celery 1.2Ghz, 256MB SD-RAM, old motherboard (socket 370) = £20.

Spare PSU lying about (20 pin 425W Hiper) and old copy of Windows 2000 Pro. Only thing I bought was the case, keyboard and mouse. Then hooked it all up :D - can be wireless if you want it to be too...

Does the Synology Download Redirector work with simple file downloads or is it only meant for torrents?

I couldn't find a user manual download on the Synology site which is a shame.

Edit - Didn't look hard enough did I ! Found the manual now.

is it ok to leave a NAS box permanently powered up?i set it to turn off HDDs after 10 mins of no activity.
it is one of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-000-DL
also just a heads up either the cable supplied is fubared or it is not a 1000mbs capable one as i wasted about an hour trying to get full speed untill i decided to change the cable and bang full speed straight away :)

You're probably putting more start/stop cycles through the drive that way than you would by turning it on and off when you want to use it. I'd either leave the HDDs running permenantly or power the whole unit down when you're not using it.

Sorry to bring this thread up again but wasnt really sure where to ask this question.

I Just wanted to know what format does the Synology NAS drive use. Are the drives formatted in FAT32 or NTFS or another format?
Reason for asking is that i believe FAT32 drives have a file size limit of around 4GB so a NAS drive that would allow me to store larger files would be ideal. Any recommendations would be appreciated :)
