Hi,
Im looking at setting up 4x 750Gb drives in Raid 5 for general file storage only, films music etc. I was going to go for and external solution(QNAP TS409), but am wondering whether the extra £300 for this NAS is worth it.
I would be looking to access the files from my PS3, so was looking at external for contantly on storage. But since the pc is currently right behind the TV, it isnt really a big issue to turn the PC on at the same time as the PS3.
My other reason was power, with the PC being pretty high spec, its got a 700W PSU, its going to drink a hell of a lot more power than an external NAS. But as before, if its only on when i need it, i cant see as that would be a big issue either.
And finally, access speed. This is where i could do with some help.
I was looking at linking everything via gigabit lan so that files flow nicely to the PS3. Both the NAS and PC will have gigalan so that isnt really an issue. however for PC access I was wondering what would be fastest?..
external LAN NAS RAID
internal RAID
external USB 2
external Firewire 400 (not seen any 800's)
external eSATA..
I havent seen any enclosures for large external USB or Firewire Raid setups so that probably rules them out. But what about eSATA?
I know it pretty much sounds like internal might be best, but was wondering if it really will be since the SATA controllers built in to motherboards tend to be a lot slower and put a drain on the CPU. So an external solution could be faster. but im not a storage expert so could be very wrong.
Could some one please help me out. Thanks
