Is there some kind of NAS enclosure perhaps, for a normall 3.5'' ide/sata hdd wich can be had for less, I'd love NAS but really can't afford to pay 150 euro's for 320 gb? :(

Akasa AK-ENP2NDAS-BK P2 Series 3.5" PATA TO USB/RJ45 External Black Ali Enclosure + Data Flash (NAS) £46.99 Inc VAT - supports up to 400GB so add this: 400 Gb Samsung HD401LJ Spinpoint T, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ £55.57 Inc VAT

= £102.56

<edit> Oops, just realised its a PATA only enclosure so looking at another £5 or so for a PATA 400gb.

Bah, cheaper for me to just buy a cheap p3 or so, use fanless cooling, and have it on 24/7 as a server & data dump place. Why is this stuff so expensive, for double the price of it you can build a reasonably fast complete pc these days  .

But is a P3 system the size of a HD enclosure? No. :)

I don't care for size myself, dont care for power usage either: parents pay for power and have enough space in my room left to for example push an old case into a corner, just the costs I care about, was expecting that a weak & inpractical (can u browse inet, download, play music, watch series, etc etc on a NAS?) device costs less than a complete functional pc, guess I was wrong...

Shame really, NAS is one of the most overpriced things I've seen.

A NAS is like a USB HD, shared across your LAN. I have a P3 933mhz system spare, but I would need a new case, new PSU, and a PCI SATA controller. Fairly close to a NAS price once you add that lot up.

I remember looking at a Vantec Nexstar LX NAS. It used 1 IDE drive and was around the £45 mark iirc. Apart from being IDE the other downside was its speed, 100/10 not gigabit, but is also usedUSB 2, so for the price seemed okay.
