I'm looking to get an external hard drive for use on a standalone machine. I'm not sure which would be better for me are there major differences performance wise? I know USB is a lot cheaper.

I'd also go for USB. Can already see problems with the NAS drive I've got coming *sigh*
If it's the Netgear SC101, then in fairness there are lots of warnings! :p.

I'm building my own NAS server at the moment. I've got 2x250GB in a RAID1 (well I will do soon), P3 1.266ghz Tualatin, MSI 6368 motherboard and 256MB SDRAM. It's going to be completely configurable and the fact it has only cost £110 for something which you can only buy for £600 makes it much better. Even the SC101 and 2x 250GB would cost a lot more (which is the cheapest RAID enabled NAS box I know - and that's carp as I believe it's not even real NAS as it needs drivers.
