NAS OS like freenas etc

Hi

Im trying to build a NAS box for storing Photos and Videos. I have the disks and Parts required and have even tried freenas but it keeps crashing on this board. I think its the SATA controler its a silicon image 3112a and seams to throw a paddy when you chuck data at it.

Are there any others out there or am i going to have to brave the linux world. I have no idea on linux. but have tried the following.

Freenas = Not stable for me. but love it.
NASLite = No raid
openfiller = no easy raid support

Im not after the fancy media sharing stuff / itunes support etc just want to raid 1 or raid 5, would like the option of powering down the drives to save some power.

Box spec.
AMD Barton 3200+
ASUS A7N8x-e deluxe with a sli 3112A Sata controler. Nforce 2
1Gb of RAM
pci video card
2 x 250Gb SATA Drives
2 x 200Gb PATA Drives

Anyideas?

I ended up using windows server 2003 for my box (using a 8 port hardware raid card, but iirc windows can do software raid) people might rip on windows, but it hasn't crashed since i built it 6 months ago. Administration, and managing torrents and other servers is a breeze using Remote Desktop.

I did originally want to use Freenas, but it diddn't properly support my raid card, and i can't think of a decent reason to change now.

My only regret is that i diddn't know about NTFS's 2TB limit, and i'll need to find somewhere to move all my data so i can reformat to GPT next time i expand my array
