Please give a recommendation of NAS RAID with approx 4TB storage (in RAID 5 config). Keep costs reasonable (no SSD drives)

Small pc case able to hold 4 hdd

Components to complete the pc

Linux and raid/lvm + samba + sabnzb+ airvideo + etc

Or freenas

For hds either 3x2tb or 4x1.5tb
Best to jave a separate boot disk as well

+1 on the microserver route.
If getting the best speeds out of Gigabit is a concern, and you have windows clients, go for a Windows OS on the NAS. Linux\BSD\Unix distros use a reverse-engineered implementation called Samba which will top out around 70-80MB/s

Ok it will be running on a Windows network and speed is important, so I will look into the HP options, is there any particular model number?

Ahh sorry i see you're in Canada i assumed you were a brit,

No worries, I am actually a Brit, I have been in Canada for 6 years nearly now though.

My other question is would a DNS-343 be a good option.
