I'm back baby!
I can see that there are similar threads to this but I can't see any that specify my requirements and I didn't want to railroad someone else's thread.

So what I would like:

Stream video directly to mobile and static devices (R-Pi, PS3, XBone, X360, etc, phones, tablets...)
Stream the above video directly to mobile devices outside my LAN
Sync and upload photos (and other data I specify) automatically
Ease of use. I'm fine with the setup, but once I've set it up the wife needs to be able to navigate around and get to the pics/videos she wants

I'm not expecting to immediately fill 2TB storage, but there's scope for that reasonably quickly so to look at something bigger, or something that can be expanded relatively easily further down the line if needed would be good.

I've got £200-£250 to spend, though for a good deal can go higher. Ta very much.

[edit]Products I've looked at:

SYNOLOGY Diskstation
NETGEAR ReadyNAS
WD MyCloud

Got a shuttle somewhere. Is it really that simple? Will it output to all those devices?

I think the Synology systems do all that. The best bet IMO and so much simpler than fiddling with installing FreeNAS.

Just map the NAS drive to the home computers and both of you will just be able to view what is on it like a normal drive in the machine.

The UI of the actual NAS is very simple and easy to use as well.

Out of the box NAS solutions are always going to be easier...

BUT, if you already have a shuttle why pay money for something that you can do with a bit of work. And tbh its really not that hard. You install FREENAS to a USB stick and run it from that. So the first time you run the nas you need it plugged into a monitor etc. Setup the base program then you can move it to under the stairs or to the garage, wherever, and then connect to it remotely.

Then you can add all the programs you want to it remotely from your main pc.

Its free.

I have an award from work that I was going to buy it with, so I'm not really losing either way :)

Qnap and Synology units are great. My wife uses my qnap with mobile apps easily enough. Asustor are also very good as most have hdmi out and can also be hooked direct to a TV as a media player running xbmc. They aren't great on mobile apps just yet but getting better
