I currently have a Windows PC serving as a home storage and PLEX media server. However, its getting quite old now (its from 2011) and i fear for data loss and the general expense of running due it it being on 24/7 (it dosnt recover from low power states so its on full power all the time).

I am looking to get a NAS to replace it, ideally with 4 bays so I can have plenty of storage space 40TB + also id like it to act as a data store for file storage in my new home office that has 3 - 4 employees accessing it remotely for light usage. How will a NAS compare in terms of transcoding performance for PLEX users, as currently the PC i have is capable of doing about 2-3 streams before it grinds to a halt, but ideally needs to be able to serve a minimum of 2 users (1080p).

Can i set up a file store that is accessible to both windows and MacOS users, and ideally a way of letting users access the data via their iPhones would be a great benefit so we can have a central repo for all our photo data.

Idea's welcomed.. So far i have sort listed the TERRAMASTER F4-423 as it seems to tick a lot of the boxes?

Footprint is tiny.
I can't speak about the aesthetics, depends if you are going to be inviting people round to look at it....
Power consumption is minimal.
They are solid bits of kit, mine has been running for I can't remember.
I use it for running my Home Assistant, legal torrent server, media server, network file server and backup.
The only warranty I'd be concerned about is on the drives I put in there.
My current machine has 4 x 3TB WD Red, but would likely move to 2 x 10TB WED Red or Ironwolf NAS .. cost permitting. What OS do you run on yours? As i want to remote into it, and using windows is just overkill and a terrible experience when trying to remote connect.
