Hi there,

I am looking at getting a NAS for my room but I want one that can use newsbin or alt binz. Is there such a box? Or would I need to create my own?

This may not be the right place to post, if so any mod. please move.

Cheers

I've seen a few multi-function NAS servers around but can't say I've come accross one that has a newsgroup client but I guess it's not unreasonable to expect one to exist.

Take a look at the qnap NAS's

I have a 409 from them , I have installed sabnzbd and i use it for my news groups.
It has a easy to use web interface for config / downloading stuff.

Its pretty awesome , I set up a rss feed from tvnzb.com and add a list of filters
to search for and download , so while I sleep it looks for matches like
Heroes*S03*720p

Which will auto download / error check and repair if necessary and extract the
hidef mkv file for the new episodes of heroes as they are released.

I was looking at the qnap, but wasn't sure about sabnzbd. But from what you say, it does everything I need it to do for me.

Cheers Wombraider

I don't think many (any?) consumer NAS units support usenet downloading without user made applications, they are VERY fiddly and unless you have linux knowledge you will have a lot of reading up to do.

Even when setup its a pain in the ass and not exactly streamlined.

Yep it was very difficult for me to click download from a webpage and
then to browse to the downloaded file from my web interface for my Nas
and to load that file onto my Nas.

The third and final click was indeed a scarey thing to do ( the one to enable the service )

The typing in of my news groups server address / username and password almost blew my mind as it was stretching my limited linux skills to the max.

for more info on qnap stuff try their forum:

You might have to register to see some of the more interesting sub forums to do with adding extra services.

:)The latest Synology firmware supports NZB files.

I take it that it will work the same way that QNap ones work?

I can't see on the website it mentioning nzb, only mentions torrents, ftp and http. I guess newsgroups would come under ftp or http?

It's just on the latest firmware update. I know it's there because I've got one myself. Just use the web browser or desktop application, tell it the location of the NZB and walk away.:)

Is that using the download station? Firmware 0722?

Edit: no worries found it
