Hey, I have both mac and pc computers at home and I am looking for a NAS device to put on my 10/100 network for backups, and storage. I've seen the Netgear SC101 but it seems to be lacking in Mac support which is just as important, please can people let me know what they have, or suggest etc... Thanks!!!

IF you can view a Windows shared folder over the network you should be able to view the NAS as it would show up like that..

no mac as in macintosh, like pc is personal computer?

Oops, sorry :p Ah yes, Macintosh!

Well with the Mac support have you checked online weather people have gotton any luck with it? I'm pretty sure Mac will have no issues at all reading of a NAS even if it is connected to a PC.

Well thats what I trhought but many of the reviews at cnet described almost all of them as not mac compatable but i dont see why either, however I would like to hear from ne one with them

As long as you don't need drivers and it shows up as an ordinary share in Windows, it should work fine on a Mac.

I would say it comes with some fancy, useless program to run in windows but it won't work on Mac. No reason why you shouldn't be able to view it in Mac though as it should just appear as a network device which you normally don't need drivers for :)

The SC101 will only (presently) work on a PC because it needs software installing on the PC before the PC can use it.

At the moment there is no Mac or Linux support for the SC101 (unless you install the software on a PC and share the NAS from the PC which totally defeats the point of NAS) but I did some searching on google a week or so ago and found mention of some 3rd party software for Linux.

To be honest, it would probably be much cheaper to pick up an old celeron or something, put a big HDD in it and wack Linux on it. Much more cost effective :)

I recently bought a Buffalo Linkstation, 250GB NAS, worked pretty much straight out of the box, has options for Mac functionality, very well worth the money, sadly though, I don't think OcUK sell them so you'll have to have a look around for one.

I have many pcs about sadly if my dad sees it as a pc he will say its using to much power to be on all the time so it wont be worth it.

This is what my Mum and Dad said when I installed my server on my home network which runs my home domain. They don't really use that much power though- especially when at idle. If it's only going to be a file server then it doesn't need to be anything special- I had a 400MHz celeron as a file server before I got my domain controller and that was fine and uses relativley no power :)

Alternativley, just spray the PC completley black and just write 'This is not a PC' on the side of it in permenant white marker :D

I've just ordered a Buffalo 250Gb NAS for £112, this seems a very good buy to me. :)
