Hi

Just started looking to into NAS's and just wanted to check some things.

Which is the most reliable brand to go for ?
After a NAS that already has the hard drive in?

Is it a case of just plugging them into the router and then navigating to it on my network?

Do they have any downtime, or can you turn them of and on remotley over the network

Cheers

Qnap or synology is who i would go for.
I would buy it empty and fit my own disk
My synology comes with software you install on the pc that searches for it and then once in you go through all the setup.
I used to have mine shut down in the day while i was at work but now just leave it on 24/7 and it sleeps when not in use.

Yep, QNAP or Synology. I went for a Synology DS212j myself and I'm in love with the little thing. As stated above, I'd go for one without drives and then add in whatever drives I need. Most NASes these days hibernate on their own when they're not being used - you can create power schedules on Synology products.

I have a Buffalo Link Station Pro at home and a Synology (can't remember model) in the office, the Synology is far better, the speed and UI are far superior and I will be getting one for the home.

I'm still rocking a synology ds210j. Awesome. Simply awesome. The software is easy, there are a wealth of features and they continue to update and improve their software. Nice iphone apps for remote access too!

I've a synology DS1511+ and it's great. Speed, software and features. Luckily I bought it filled it with HDD just before (couple of weeks) the price hike.

I have two spare 1tb Samsung drives that I am thinking of putting into a qnap.

Main uses, iTunes and share for files. Would look at ms offline file option. Emails are stored in exchange etc.

Yup I vote for Synology too...

I am rocking 2 at home for different things just because I love em!

Reliable, and support is great.

Definitely worth looking into.
And as said above you can create power schedules or just login via the UI and shut it down.

Dunno what it does but i guess so??

I would say

Synology for everyday home user

QNAP for more buisness type applications and virtualisation

SmallNetBuilder.com is a good reference/research source :)

Iv got a DS411j and its great.

Probably the only small mark against is lack of USB3.... but if your networked it's a very minor negative :)

I've just obtained a little DS110J (cheapo) and I'm impressed with what this gizmo does. Although I'm more than tied down at the mo with setting up the nice new shiny microsever .... lol

With the Synology enclosures, If I put a drive in it that's already got data on it, will I have to format it before being able to use it?

I'm not too fussed about a media server components now as I'd rather store my iTunes as a standard drive letter, i.e. have the unit present a lun etc.

Reason for this is I already use home sharing from my itunes for my apple TV and iphone etc.

Key thing really is hosting data securely etc.

Would it be suitable to host steam files on it again as a seperate disk / lun config or do people rec that'll cause issues?

It'll definitely wipe and reformat the first drive you put in, as it needs to put some OS stuff on it. As for others drives, well... I've been told that the only thing you can put in there without the DiskStation wiping it is a drive from another DiskStation. This is annoying, and I'm still running my main storage drive off USB because of this (because I refuse to buy a 2TB drive for £150).
