Hi,

Can anyone recommend a NAS solution for storing photos? It would need to be expandable and to be accessible remotely.

I have been looking at the Drobo FS. Has anyone got any experience with this NAS?

How much space do you need and how much redundancy? Also whats your budget?

I would take a look at a Synology DS212j for a two bay solution and raid a pair of drives. That way you have a backup if one drive fails. Check out my review HERE.

Or maybe a Qnap TS212. Although for my mind Synology pip them due to the software being sleaker.

Or, you could try a HP Microserver. With the cashback offer that seems to be permanently on you can get the latest one for roughly £150. Chuck in a copy of windows home server and bobs your uncle, maybe. Benefit of this is future expandability.

Drobos have been around for more than a decade long before there was such a thing as NAS.

As photographer, I heard about Drobos when I was still using film, because of the problem with digital photo files kept on an ordinary hard drive, have a more than 50% chance of the file being corrupted in ten years’ time. Drobos beyond raid means your files are being moved around the disk constantly. Drobos have a serious reputation in the photography world as backup storage, but almost unknown to most people. If you are looking at doing more things, like hosting, streaming there are more suitable bit of kit out there.

I looked into building myself a server out of left over parts, or an HP Microserver, but IMHO, in terms of cost, I had to go with the Drobo FS at £290. To build a 5 bay, raid 5, upgradeable, two disk redundancy server/NAS with software for the same money is a tough call.

My FS is still in its box, as I am currently saving up to buy 3 x Barracuda XT 3TB Hard Drives - ST32000641AS and a gigabyte switch. I will be logging my build in September, so I will let you know how I got on.
