Hi All,

Wonder if anyone can recommend a NAS?

I'm looking for around 4TB of storage and possibly the ability to stream HD or use plex?

I've not idea where to start as I've always just used USB HD's on a server.

Hi

I would go for an enclosure such as the DS212j. Cracking bit of kit. My review HERE

However if you want to run plex and transcode on the fly you will need beefier. I have a DS712+ which is superb and transcodes on the fly to my plex app on my ios devices. DS712+ review HERE

The DS712+ has now been replaced by the DS713+ which bumps up to dual core. Mine is apparently on the way to me by royal fail so expect a full review plus vids on my site.

All three devices are dual bay so you could have 2x2tb drives giving 2tb useable in raid 1 or 4tb in raid 0.

You could also go for a four bay.........

Would be handy to know your budget

Thanks for replying, must admit I do really like the Synology kit but not sure I can stretch to a DS713+! Realistically a DS212j would be more in my price just a shame you dont think it'll plex!

I'll take a look at your reviews!

I got a Synology 5-bay NAS (DS1010+). The software is excellent although not quite as configurable as LVM for RAID setups. Performance is adequate for backup and streaming but I've personally switched back to local in-pc storage for my primary data as I wasn't happy with the performance loss.

Another vote for Synology here - I recently upgraded from a Buffalo Linkstation to a DS213 and it's great!

The UI is a joy to deal with compared to the Buffalo!

What devices will you be watching the vids on. They will all stream fine so it's a case of if your device supports the file type it's just simply streaming. Ttranscoding is only needed when the device doesn't support the file type. ie ios doesn't support mkv so I transcode. There are other plyers though such as aceplayer app that will play mkv so a way around it may be just using a different app?
