Las Vegas this weekend for Cup and Xfinity. Trucks aren't running this weekend.

Brett Moffitt is in at Front Row Motorsports to drive the #34 (Joe Nemechek drove it last weekend IIRC) while David Ragan continues to sub for Kyle Busch and Regan Smith subs for the suspended Kurt Busch.

Joey Logano pretty much dominated the Xfinity race at Phoenix. Pole and the win, leading 176 out of the 200 laps. Matt Kenseth made a fight of it, which kept it from being too dull.

Xfinity results.

Cup race later, Kevin Harvick and Logano are on the front row. Harvick won this race last year and the way he's driving right now he could end up in Victory Lane again today.

Ah well, called it. 224 laps led out of 312, 4th consecutive win at this place, and Harvick is looking mighty this year. Kurt Busch got a top 5 finish on his return, and Jeff Gordon survived an entire race without getting taken out by some **** to net himself a 9th place finish. Wonders never cease.

It was another miserable race for Tony Stewart - though it had shown some promise, he ended the day down in 39th after a crash. And Junebug also crashed, which left him last in the race without even a start-and-park minnow to elevate him.

Results.

So, I was going to talk about how Fontana actually produced a half-decent Cup race for once (first time for everything) and how glad I am that NASCAR didn't **** it all up by throwing the caution right at the end. But none of that really matters.

Brian Vickers had been sidelined for the start of the year due to heart surgery - a patch put in over a hole in his heart was being rejected by his body, and in December he went in for corrective surgery that successfully repaired that hole. He raced at LV and Phoenix, and all seemed to be well. But now he's been sidelined again.

Back in 2010, Vickers suffered blood clots in his legs and lungs. He missed most of the season because of that. After being given the all clear, he returned for the 2011 season. Then he suffered another clot in his leg and missed the last four races of the '13 season. Once again he was cleared to race last year. Now the blood clots have returned.

I have to feel really sorry for him. He has this health issue, gets himself back to fitness. Then Red Bull Racing pull out of NASCAR at the end of the '11 season leaving him stuck without a drive. He does a good job subbing for other drivers, and running part-schedules with Michael Waltrip Racing, wins some more battles with his health, gets back into a full-time ride with MWR....and now he's back out of the car, three months out at the very least while he takes a course of blood thinners, and facing the very real possibility that he'll have to call time on his racing career.

Sucks :(

Martinsville was it's typically crazy self. Gotta love short track racing :D

All told, not too kind a day for the Hendrick team. Jeff made it into the top 10, but his day was hardly straightforward. Kahne did okay, led some laps and finished in 11th. But Junebug and JJ were less fortunate - many laps off the lead and in Dale Jr's case missing the front sheetmetal entirely. And Chase Elliott had a rough Cup debut - see a selection of moments from that here.

The Xfinity series didn't race at Martinsville, but the Trucks did. As you might imagine, it was a reasonably wild affair. Here's how it ended:

NASCAR has announced that group qualifying will be abolished at the superspeedways (Daytona and Talladega). Sanity has triumphed over gimmicky ****. Maybe the FIA could send a delegation over to Daytona Beach to see how a slightly decent governing body operates, take home a few pointers.

Meanwhile, Ryan Newman and the Childress #31 team have received a battering off NASCAR for tyre tampering - they illegally altered air pressures in the tyres, tampering with the tyres or wheels to make them lose air once the temperatures started to raise the air pressure. Newman loses 75 points in the championship, dropping him from 6th to 26th in the standings. Richard Childress also loses 75 owners points. Crew chief Luke Lambert is now sidelined for six races, so are engineer Philip Surgen and tyre tech James Bender.

RCR will consider their options once NASCAR provides further information to them.

RCR are appealing the penalty - it'll be heard on the 16th of April. The fine (Lambert was fined $125,000) and the suspensions have been deferred until after the appeal has been heard. The points deductions stand until they're either confirmed or rescinded. RCR believe they have a strong case - I hope they do, they were very vocal about how bad tyre tampering was for the sport and I'd hate to see them shown to be complete hypocrites!

Texas this weekend, after everyone had the Easter weekend off. The Trucks aren't running again until May now :( Have to get my fix watching old races on YT! :)

The #31 team appeal over the tyre infraction will be heard today. Curious to hear what they'll say.

In other news, Kyle Busch has talked about the crash that has sidelined him this season. He impacted the wall at about 90mph, and has taken all the blame for the accident - he reckons he was just being too greedy at that point trying to win the race. He's hoping to be back by the July Daytona race, but it's not certain if that'll be possible yet.

#31 penalty upheld.

More details.

So, points penalties and fines reduced a little, suspensions and probation unchanged. RCR have one more appeal left in the process, they can appeal the decision to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer.

Predictably, NASCAR fandumb has exploded into the tired old warcry of 'nurrr if this was a Hendrick car they'd have gotten away with it nurrr'. Hey ho.

Been watching some older (mid to late '90s) races on YouTube, and I'm reminded just how incredible a stock car driver Dale Earnhardt Sr was.

He did the odd thing that I disagree with (that punt on Terry Labonte at Bristol being one), but he really was one of the greatest race car drivers of all time.

Bristol did it's usual Bristol thing. Lots of close racing, a few crashes (11 caution periods in all), rain delays and the guy who started at the front ended up at the front. Congrats to Matt Kenseth on ending his drought of wins.

Some of the action:

And a quick word about the Xfinity race - Logano simply dominated it, leading every lap.

Holly Cain (who is also going through treatment for cancer) wrote this. No more words to add. Just tears, and smiles, and more tears and smiles.

Xfinity race was dominated by one driver again - Denny Hamlin led all but two laps on his way to Victory Lane. 100th series win for Toyota as well.

Starting line-up for the Cup race is here.

Ah, Talladega. The usual lottery of plate racing caught out drivers in both the Xfinity and Cup series races, rather more spectacularly in the case of the Cup race today. Congrats to Joey Logano for the Xfinity win, and to Dale Earnhardt Jr for his win today - first 'dega win since 2004.

Oh, and re: the Xfinity race. Two members of the #98 team got winged on pit road when Brendan Gaughan in the #62 lost control and slid through their pit stall. Both were taken to the infield care centre, one had to go to hospital for further checks. Don't know if there's been any more info released about his condition.
