Hey, ijust came home to my house after being out all day so its probs about 3 degrees indoors. very cold. I started up my computer and the hard disk made a bit of a gritty sound, i had to listen in closely to work out it was the hard drive and not the fans. The sound has now stopped, but it was a bit disconcerting. Im wondering if it may be to do with the cold, though this seems very odd for a computer.

Are you sure it is the hdd as i get a similar sound from my pc but after inspecting it is coming from one of my case fans. I too thought it was hdd but when i disconnected them and booted with just fans going it showed it was the fan. Stops after about 10 seconds in my case.(No pun intended)

Ahh well i have a very large 120mm fan ibelieve blowing onto it, i suppose it could have been that. i've wiped the dust away, but if the sound comes back ii will have a fiddle with the large fan. It did sound mightily like the HDD tho.
