National Anthem

2nd line of the National Anthem.... ahhh that'll be

" Gwlad beirdd a chantorion enwogion o fri"

;) :)

Seriously though, I know all of God Save the Queen, as it's the National Anthem of the United Kingdom (must resist temptation to start a rant about "English team usage" in sports events ;) )
However, it's not a particulary inspiring set of words our tune. I mean, the Welsh one is much better muscially and lyrically (http://www.geocities.com/olusegunyayi/wales.html).

The Japanese one is pretty much the same as the UK one... just singing about someone, and the tune is even less inspiring (http://www.geocities.com/olusegunyayi/japon.html)

Ours is a real **** to remember :p

We have the Official one

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

We have the Original one (Not many people know of this one)

Australia's sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Britannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this youthful Commonwealth
Renowned of all the lands;
For loyal sons beyond the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Britannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a English soul.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

And we have the Missing 3rd Verse that different places sometimes decide to put it in the Anthem just because they can :p

With Christ our head and cornerstone,
We'll build our Nation's might.
Whose way and truth and light alone
Can guide our path aright.
Our lives, a sacrifice of love, reflect our Master's care.
With faces turned to heaven above, Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

The 6th verse of National Anthem is

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

The whole Anthem is

1
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.
2
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
3
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen.
4
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world o'er.
5
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
6
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

Neither has Scotland, officially. :eek:

We just like to wind up the English with Flower of Scotland. :p
At least you have an unofficial one then! We English have to make do with the UK anthem, the words of which are all about the Queen and nothing to do with the nation of England (or even the UK) whatsoever. If you're a republican you're a bit buggered really :)

I thought after the first line it just went "murrrr murrrr murrrr murrrrr mu mu murrr murrrr..... " ;)

no your rythrm is wrong its...

murrr murrr murrr murrrrrrr mur murrr, murrr murrr murrr murrrrrr mur murrr, murrr murrr murrr murrrrrr!

Off the top of my head:

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hail at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave

That's only the first verse. I don't know the other three. :o

edit: Interesting enough, though, in reading through this thread: Americans would never consider altering the lyrics to the National Anthem. It's strange how different the pride in our nations is. The worst I've seen (heard) is when certain singers totally mangle the notes during sporting events.

Do UK football matches start off with the National Anthem each time? Or is that something that's rarely heard?

I know most of the first verse of the french one and the most of the chorus. (I sometimes muddle the words).

I know the 1st verse of the english one as I had to sing it at school often during assemblies and other such things.

I know Canada's and America's but not much of ours :confused:
I guess that's because they tend to have a singer at their sporting events whereas we have a crappy recorded version of the anthem.
