Native resolution display issue

My new Samsung 24" displays perfectly in the 1680x1050 resolution but when put into the native 1920x1080 resolution some of the viewing around at the top, bottom and sides is lost i.e. the picture now appears to big for the screen - is there a way of solving this or is 1680x1050 the proper display resolution?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming 1920x1080 is the native resolution, that you're using an AMD/ATI card and a HDMI connection, then go into the Catalyst Control Centre and set overscan to 0%.

Ensure your monitor is set to PC mode if it has such a thing.

Alternatively use a DVI cable if your monitor has a DVI connection.

That's the best I can do with the information you haven't provided.

If you want any more help then provide:

  • the model of the monitor
  • the make and model of your graphics card
  • the type of cable you're using

Surveyor, appreciate the quick response - hoping that it was a simple solution and that therefore specifications might not be necessary - so here is the information:

Samsung B2430H 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
Gainward GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
HDMI connection cable

The NVIDIA control panel suggests that 1920x1080 is the native resolution but the PC mode indicated reaches only 1680x1050

Sorry, I'm using AMD/ATI GPU's at the moment so can't have a look at the Nvidia Control Panel.

Make sure you've installed any drivers which came with the monitor.

Somewhere in the Nvidia Control Panel there must be options for HDMI scaling.

If you can't find them then I'm sure an Nvidia user will be able to point you in the right direction.

But, where you have a DVI connection on the monitor, a £5 DVI-D cable is the simplest solution and does away with all these HDMI scaling problems.

Unless you want audio as well of course but I can't see that your monitor has speakers.

Thanks again surveyor - happy to use a DVI cable if there is no loss in fidelity or quality - I'm using external speakers for sound as you intuited. Will try the suggestions you have made.

In the meantime...

Was that the resolution of your previous monitor by any chance? Remove any monitor drivers, restart your system. Then:

Go to Forceware control panel and navigate to ‘Display’ –> ‘Adjust desktop color settings’.

Select ‘Desktop programs’ from the ‘content type reported to the display’ dropdown.

PCM2 - tried suggestion but left with the same problem and an emphatically blue tint to the screen - going with the 1680x1050 until getting the DVI cable - thanks though.
