I've been using the Intellimouse Explorer 3 for games but now the left click is on its way out so I'm looking for an alternative wired mouse.
Although the intellimouse is almost perfect comfort-wise, it feels a bit tacky so I'm after something with a bit better build quality.
As I say, it's mainly for gaming use but I don't want to spend loads. Budget up to around £40 - possibly a bit more.

Logitech MX518 is one of the best all round gaming mouses created for the price, well worth considering.

add a fiver and get a g500 it is an amazing mouse, its a cross between the g5 and mx518two other amazing mice

if you want a mouse similar to the 3.0 get the razer deathadder. best performance, similar shape.
check the esreality updated mouse scores, it wont let me post the link but just google it.

I've had a few of the Logitechs before, an MX 510 (I think) and a G5. Although they're great mice I'm not too keen on the way your thumb goes into a big indentation on the left. I find with the intellimice that you can just use a light grip with the palm slightly above the back of the mouse rather than touching it.
I just spotted this one which looks just like the intellimouse but it kind of blows my budget. Looks great though :)

Looks extremely bland for the price tag. i expect a £60 mouse to have laser guns and things sticking out the side. styling taste is personal though so you probabely wont care about this post if you lke the design

I did go for the Xai in the end, after reading loads of positive reviews.

It arrived today and I'm really impressed - really solid build quality and ultra comfortable. It's a lot to spend for a mouse but hopefully it should last a long time.

You state it is comfortable. Just wondering if you could comment on the size and weight.

I have a Razer Copperhead which I have never liked. I find it too small for my hand, the buttons uncomfortable to get too and too light. I know it's a personal thing but I do not want to get the Xai only to find out I have made a mistake again.

I am tempted to get a Sidewinder, but the Xai does look nice.

The microsoft intellimouse 3.0 is the single best mouse on the planet; if I were to compromise my own skill and pick another mouse the only other I would personally use is the Steelseries Xai (going for around the £60), its the only other mouse that gives me the kind of tracking and pinpoint accuracy the im3.0 offers (providing your on a mousepad of course; something like the steelseries Qck+/razer mantis control will be best bet for one of the two mice i just mentioned).
