Nearly 90,000 sex abuse claims filed against Boy Scouts of America

I was a good looking kid and a retired beaver and never had any issues. I'm pretty sure its no where near as bad as the catholic church! 90000 cases is mad though

it completely eclipses the abuses of the entire Catholic Church. That's quite an achievement.

Yea but oh look, what a surprise.

"The Boy Scouts of America requires all Scouts to believe in a God or comparable higher power, but currently admits Scouts who are non-theistic...."

It'll be run by religious crackpots.

Well... that used to be the case. But not so much these days.

* 2010: BSA allows heterosexual girls to join
* 2013: BSA allows gay girls and boys to join
* 2015: BSA starts hiring openly gay scoutmasters, while concealing the ongoing crisis of sexual abuse by closeted gay scoutmasters
* 2017: BSA allows openly transgender boys to join

don't get the last bit - if they already allowed girls to join then what was preventing trangender boys joining before 2017?

Probably the fact that the BSA saw them as girls wanting to share private spaces with boys. Getting undressed together, using the same loos, sleeping in the same tents, etc.

lol, how can you say that with a straight face. Its a corrupt cesspit in its current state.

I know it's really popular to bash America and people tend to get a free pass, but it's not at all a corrupt cesspit, it's relatively one of the least corrupt countries in the world. If you were doing a study on countries that have large scale corruption America wouldn't even be in the conversation.

Well, as someone who has been involved in Scouting in the UK through being a member of Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts units and then through leadership and now SASU, I can assure you that the current organisation makes great effort to ensure this no longer happens. The first piece of training you do is safeguarding and child protection - it's of a similar standard and rigour to the training in teaching.

As a former beaver and now cub leader, I can confirm this is definitely the case, along with background checks and CRB. We have a dedicated "yellow card" which includes various policies e.g. making sure you aren't ever alone with a child, not joining in with contact sports etc. My son isn't even allowed to share a tent with me when we go on camps.

I have no doubt that historically this happened in the UK as well, but these days it's definitely on the radar and taken very seriously.
