I've only had this monitor a few days, but tonight I put on dvd, which was in letterbox mode, i noticed something odd, down the left hand corner of my screen i can still see the windows "start" button outline!

Having only had this monitor for a few days I find this quite puzzling, I don't spend that much time on the windows desktop, but I guess my task-bar is always locked there. What I really want to know is if this is fixable and is there anyway to stop this from happening again.. I'm so scared to leave anything on the screen for two long now!

Another problem I noticed, and I'm not really sure if I should expect this or not, but in the left hand corner and top right corner I have areas of the screen which are never totally black, there seems to be little patches of lighter areas in these two corners.. is this normal?

I don't recall seeing any of these issues with my old acer 17" tft, have I got a faulty monitor?

The lighter parts are a bit of backlight bleed. Some have it, some don't. It's the luck of the draw. Have a read through the big topic about this monitor, NEC might allow RMA for blacklight bleed.

As for the start button outline. That could be a driver/software issue. Have you tried using a different DVD player? Try using VideoLan (VLC player), a freeware multi format media player and see if you get the same issue.

Setup a blank screensaver and see if you still get the outline, if so, you might have some stuck pixels, which will definitely be under warranty.

Check here for NEC's dead pixel policy (Second table)

Thanks for your reply. I just noticed there I also have the "X" from windows at the top right hand corner of my screen too. I tried to take a photo of it and the start menu, but its only visible from certain angles and my camera wasn't able to pick it up. It would seem the areas of image persistence are in the same place as my back-light bleed problems.

I know its not anything to do with the DVD player software, it was only by using that and having those parts of the screen black that i was able to notice it easier for the first time. VLC is what I'm using also.

I've just ran dead pixel buddy on 1second cycle for past half hour, and the image seems to have faded a little, but you can still very slightly see it. If this is going to be a persistent problem with this monitor then I think I'll have to take your advice and contact NEC.

Image persistence can happen on the LCD monitors (globally) if you are keeping for a *very* long time some fixed & bright part of the screen constantly visible (like task bar ... etc) and monitor is not going into the standby mode and/or screen saver is not active, when the computer is idle. It's usually not the sign that monitor is defective. Now, I'm not quite sure how long the fixed image have to be present on the screen until image persistence kicks in, bit it should be quite longish. I never experienced the image persistence as monitor is going in stand by mode when my PC is idle for more then 15min. Do you use stand by mode or screen saver at all ? (as part of the monitor power management from windows). Also, if you are sometimes playing the games and some parts of the screen are fixed and constantly visible, it's quite enough that you from time to time just press the esc button (or something similar) in order to refresh the pixels.

Cure for the image persistence is simple. Just turn off the monitor (via the front power off illuminated button) for a period of time how long (approximately) the fixed image was present on the screen. When you power on the monitor again, it shouldn't be there anymore. From what you described, it does sound to me as image persistence ... especially if you have just slightly visible outlines of the images and they are viewable usually from the different angels.

Regarding the slight backlight bleed, nothing much to do expect to wait until the proper monitor burn-in and see if there is any progress. Many users reported that backlight bleed faded away after couple of days.

At the end, fell free to post anything related to the NEC monitor in the dedicated thread for the monitor review. This thread is monitored by many users of this monitor and I'm sure that you will discover & learn a lot of things in this massive thread. Also, other users will gladly help you for any further questions you may have.

Nec have a limited number of monitors in today for all you RMA people (me included) lets hope the one i receive has less of the backlight problems and no additional problems. Just to say i can't wait to play Oblivion on this thing and my 7900GT is on it's way too. 7800GTX speed at a bargin price and a huge upgrade from my trusty 6600GT.

Igors I hear what you are saying about how image persistence can be a problem if left too long, I do have a screen-saver set, but the problem is I spend a good deal of time browsing the web and using ms office etc, in all of these programs the start button and the "X" are visible in the same place all the time, so there is not really much I can do to reduce this problem, I set my task-bar to "auto-hide" and try to keep programs from filling the full screen. But there really isn't much I can do about this, I switched on monitor today after a full night of being off, and I could immediately see the "X" on the top right corner. I now think this is unavoidable, and since these areas are also the areas affected by the back light problem I have to assume they are linked. I'm going to phone NEC today and see if anything can be done.
