NEC MultiSync® 90GX2 19" LCD Monitor

HEllo,

I am thinking of getting the above monitor for gaming and general video use to replace my Relisys 17'' CRT. I have been very happy with my CRT, though now it looks very big in my dinning room.

So is the above monitor a good choice, will it be a better picture.
Is the TN film panel not old techology as LCD TFT screens go ! ? :

Or is the Viewsonic VX922 a better choice ?

the VX922 is well established as one of the best gaming screens on the market. NEC are soon to update the 90GX2 to the Pro edition with improved response time, and in practice it would probably be hard to tell much difference between the two NEC models and the Viewsonic anyway. If you prefer the design./features of one over the other, i'd use that to make the decision

The price on both have come down to under £200.
Which is good news for us consumers.
The TN film, is that not old technology as TFT's go ?

well in a way, yes, it is old. It is the most commonly used though, and has come on in performance over the last year or so with improved colour accuracy, black depth and responsiveness. Take a look here at it's characteristics

Thanks for the info, do you have an opion on this monitor Viewsonic 22" LCD VX2235 5ms Response time, 700:1 Contrast ratio ?

Is the 22'' better performer than the 2 19'' TFT I have mentioned.

well both are TN Film based. The VX922 will have the edge in regards to responsiveness, being arguably the fastest on the market right now. However, in real terms, both screens should be adequate. I guess the main difference here is going to be the screen size, extra res and WS format. Might be a bit better since it will offer more immersion in games, and WS is very good for multimedia use

The Wide Screen TFT's, do they stretch the picture ?
I was chatting to Admrial Huddy, who thinks that TFT manufactures release patchs / drivers which will not stretch the pic and show more of the game map / spread sheet / word who are viewing !

This upgrade to a TFT monitor is more complex than i original envisage, Admrial Huddy was mentioning that more games coming out are geared for wide screen format. So if I did buy a normal aspect ratio TFT monitor. I will get a letter box screen when I play games ! ?

What monitor is the best to buy ! ? :confused:

That is the strangest thing I have ever heard. Games only get stretched if they do not support a WS resolution, however some monitors come with 1:1 pixel mapping so you can run them at 4:3 or a 5:4 ratio (black bars on the sides, or even all around the image), also in most games that don't support a WS resolution you can edit settings in the .ini file or registry to allow them to use the widescreen resolution.

You wont get a letterbox screen when playing future games because they will still support standard resolutions - have you never changed a resolution in a game, ever? Also games that support widescreen just give you a wider field of view.

That makes life eaiser then, as I would sooner buy a normal aspect ration screen than a wide screen. As I like tye big screen look rather than the Wide screen. Because to get the hight of a 19'' normal screen, I would have to buy some thing like 25'' to 27'' in wide screen format.

have you any suggestion which monitor in normal aspect ratio is the best one to buy for apx £200 - £250 ?

You do realise a 20" WS is actually 26 pixel more in hight than a 19" 5:4 (1280x1024) aspect ratio? 20" WS is 1680x1050, 19" 5:4 is 1280x1024.

Not quite what I said dude, I said that more games developers are accomodating for WS formats. Patches are norammly supplied for those that don't support WS out of the box, or a quick .ini file edit can sometime do the trick.

You seem to be worried about stretching? THis won't happen. Non WS software will just be display at the resulution the are intended for.

I'm still sold to the 22" WS option over a normal aspect. For the same price you get a better view and a higher resolution. Personally, I think you'd be silly not going for one of the wider screen aspects.

I'm going for the Sumsung 22" which has been highly recommended.

I will check your Samsung monitor out. 22' does seem a very good size for a monitor. I remember my 1st monitor as a 14'' CRT beige thing ! !
I just would like to get the best and the right monitor for me that I can afford. As I will have it for a long time, and it seems to be a complete mine field !
