I'm actually in the same position myself, debating whether to go to 4GB, it's unnerving seeing memory usage at 97% (of 2GB) or more running Supreme Commander or Crysis etc.
What about performance? Would there be any performance hit because not all the memory can be used? I've already experimented with 4x1GB, XP saw 3.25GB total, which I'd be very happy with, at least until the inevitable, unavoidable Vista upgrade.
When I say a performance hit I mean, as it's dual channel, would it make a difference? Can you still use dual channel mode? Would each stick be using 1.625GB of it's total or would one stick be used fully and the other only have 1.25GB in use?
Sorry to hijack the thread but the responses could help us both.
Thanks in advance.

Incase OP's interested, I'm currently looking at these:

I've just had (last week) bad luck with Crucial and that's the last time I'll be trusting them, I've never had problems with OCZ though, just my experience.
