Ok as per title, I need a badass wireless modem/router primarily for downloading/gaming. I have a Belkin 7633 and it's now on its way out and seems to be freezing frequently... the intenet LED just freezes and it needs to be rebooted to get the connection back, upon which time it can take anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes to do the same all over again. When downloading and especially gaming this is simply unacceptable, and now it has to go.

I'm looking for something that supports the latest technologies that is known for being rock solid and stable no matter what abuse it's getting, whether wired of wireless (will be 99% wired activity though).

I want to avoid Belkin if possible due to their (in my experience) dreadful support... but I guess if they do have the best hardware out nowadays I would consider it.

Any suggestions please? :)

I've been using a Netgear 834G which for me has been rock solid but I have seen others report problems. The 834GT that Sky issue are also supposed to very good at squeezing max connection rates.

tbh - i'm well chuffed with my linksys. i use it for bit torrent 24/7 (the kind of person ISP's hate). and also for XBOX Live gaming.

my netgear used to get saturated and require rebooting regularly.

my linksys - get's rebooted rarely. i mean longer than every couple of months.

vimpster what's your model number? Would be helpful for investigative purposes. :p

Also what do people think of these:

Buffalo WBMR-G300N Nfiniti

D-Link DKT-810

Ohhhh just been looking at this one, the Draytek 2820n and it looks like the most amazing piece of home networking kit... http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2820.html

I know it's expensive at £170 but bloody hell witht hat awesome spec that thing should last years...

Draytek rock, i had a router about 5 years ago that was flawless. It had a socket for a USB Modem (the old green frog/stingray style BT used to provide). When the modem died i switched to Netgear for a year or so which was largely unstable.

I changed to the Linksys WAG54GX2 well over a year ago and am well chuffed.

Ok in the end I went with a considerably more modest router than the Draytek... the Linksys WAG200G. Gets universally excellent user reviews on all counts... holding signal on crappy lines, stability etc etc and Linksys support also rock. Good price too @ £46inc next day delivery.

I have heard negative things about the Draytek I listed above... VERY bad holding of signal on longer lines and iffy wireless ocmpatability with Intel wireless cards. For me I think it would be overkill.

Should receive it tommorrow. :)

another shout here for the netgear 834G - simple to setup and rock solid. not dropped connections at all and handles 2 pcs and a laptop fine.

cheap as chips as well

I have to say my Linksys has been spot on for me WAG54GS had one at my parents for over year and its rock solid just moved into my own place and got another one and that has been spot on too i use torrents also!

had my draytek 5 years for cable, never once has it crashed or gone slow and required a reboot. best £150 quid i ever spent. Go with the draytek it will last donkeys

The cost and negative points outweigh the benefits for me, my line is loooong and im only on regular ADSL 2MB. :)

Well i got the Linksys WAG200G and the difference is like night and day.. one of the best £45 i've ever spent! The web-based interface is massively superior to that of the Belkin in terms of user-friendliness, and so far it hasn't skipped a beat with any gaming or downloading, and runs so cool compared to the Belkin.

I would give this router 9/10 for the money I spent on it... great piece of kit! :)

Another vote for the Draytek, I am actually going to get one of these! Fed up with boring Sky DG834GT.
I had a Draytek Vigor 2600 or something for a couple years, but had to leavev it because I moved to ADSL Max and it didn't support it. But it was rock solid, never really had to reboot it - and back then I didn't even know what a modem was! So it was even good for a newb.

boring Sky DG834GT.

I just got myself one of these off the bay to use with BE as the bebox was being a little iffy at best. Well so far so good, it syncs me around 2mb higher, just hope its stable. Dont think much of the web interface though, much prefered speedtouch there.
You have to telnet into the router everytime you want to see how many times the line dropped over night? why could'nt they of just put that info in the web interface or am I missing something?.
