Need a bag.

Another question I have is: soft or hard? (fnar)

What are people's opinions on this?

I'd suggest hard myself, but it really depends how much travelling you're going, where you're going and what you're taking.
If you're just going to be doing the usual summer holidays in the usual places then a soft bag (with a bit of 'structure') would fit your purposes fine. Also, a hard bag is going to be much heavier so you'll be limited on what you can take with you due to weight restrictions.
Wheels are quite common nowadays, I understand them to a point but they are going to add at least a kilo onto the weight of a bag which you have to consider. Do you want the convenience of wheeling your case about for a few minutes or would that extra bit of baggage allowance be quite useful?
If you're just going to be doing the usual summer holidays then you probably don't need a Samsonite. You'll save money in the long run I'm sure but it'll probably take some years before you notice it.

Yeah, well I think I'll probably stick to soft then.

I'll be using the bag for going on a few flights/travel abuse within the next year. I'd also potentially like to use it for when I eventually manage to do the whole 'gap year traveller' thing.

I use a Da Kine Split Roller although it's several years old now so not this model and you should be able to find it cheaper, I've found the Split Convertible Roller (which is even bigger) for ~£95 at Boardridersguide. I've taken it on a fair few trips now and it's helped me move house about 3-4 times but aside from a few scuffs looks as good and works as well as it did when new.

I got the Lifeventure Ceduna 120 litre for going to Nz, Aus & Singapore February gone, it looks pretty good ,seems quite well made, reasonable weight , has wheels and loads of room. It looks good as new still after 10 or so flights so hopefully that's a sign it's going to last a while.
