Currently I'm doing a lot of long distance driving and it is really cutting into my finances, even though it is a 1.2 XSI Corsa. I don't think the high millage is helping here either at 103k.

So what car that is either petrol or diesel would you recommend I look towards that has a fantastic MPG? - Second hand cars only please :)

Tesla Model S P90D.

BMW i8.

How about a budget and some more specifics numbnuts :p

Just a rough idea doofus please :P

Here's mine currently

1.2 16V SXi (80ps) 4d

URBAN MPG 30.4
EXTRA-URBAN MPG 43.1 ( might be lower now )
COMBINED MPG 37.7

Why not keep it instead of spending more on a new/used car, offset the cost on fuel instead?

COMBINED MPG 37.7

This might genuinely be the sticking point. The mpg isn't exactly awful, and to get something genuinely better (and be as reliable as a 1.2 petrol Corsa) is going to incur some money.

If your car does a theoretical 37mpg and you do, say, 20,000 miles a year at a petrol cost of £1.1 per litre, then that's going to cost you £2,700 per annum in fuel.

If you find a car that can do 50mpg then you're going to save £700 a year.

My idea behind getting a different car in your scenario would be to get something more comfortable. I can't imagine doing anything more than short town trips in a Corsa.

You need to look at the bigger picture really. How long are you going to be commuting for? How much is the Corsa worth? How much extra are you going to have to pay on top to get a car with better MPGs? How long is your ROI on the car (how long before you actually start saving)?

Haven't really worked out my general Mileage :(

Thank you, that's what I need!

No its not.

You're approaching this completely backwards. How can you not know how many miles youre covering?

You cant even begin to work out if you're better off if you cant do the simple sums! And you *still* havent said what your budget would be. So I'm going to suggest this

Would take about 30 years to break even, if youre doing 15,000 miles per year :D

Cool

Very wise words Vita :) However the fact that it is has a very high millage, head gasket issues it wont last for ever anyway.

So why not just keep on running until it does eventually die or you run into major issues? Surely that will be cheaper in the long run? You may get another 12-24-36 months out of it, you never know.
