I'm going to order a new 24" panel (most likely the dell 2409). I don't really game on the my machine but will be doing some photo editing and watching movies etc. Would want to run in the best resolution i can though.

What sort of card should i be looking at? been a long time since i bought one. I'm still running a 1950pro! :eek:

EDIT: this will be going into a SUGO so must have a cooler which shifts the heat out of the rear of the case. Dual slot is OK though

I would get a HD4850, just in case you do game, or a HD4770 should do the trick

you could get a HD4870 for that as well just
 
both a great cards, but I feel the HD4890 may be wasted a bit, but its there in case you do start gaming.

I had a 512mb HD4870 on a 24inch, don't expect big frame rates with it but it did its job for me for a while till i got it a partner card
 
sounds like for the extra £25 it would be worth going for the 4890? Plus, i read the cheaper one i listed doesn't push the hot air out the rear with the stock fan.
 
yeah if you plan to use it for gaming at a later date. as far as I m aware all the stock fans are pretty much the same.

It's considerably faster (especially at 1920x1200), has more RAM, supports DX 10.1 (minor point), has a cooler that exhausts outside the case (though it is noisier).

Admittedly if the OPs not gaming then both the GTX260 and HD4890 are complete overkill.

i won't really be gaming.....just want a decent spec card which will exhaust the hot air rather than leave it in the case.

Budget would be around £100-£120 as this is what i've always spent on a GC when buying.

what should i look at lower than this?
 
buy a 2nd hand 8800GTX :D Does the job just fine for me. O wait I'm putting mine up for sale... OK doesn't helpt the arguement. Only reason for selling is need shorter length card now.

And on that note, that would be why the HD4890 might be better for you in a Sugo. The GTX260 would fit and does offer some nice support for things like cuda and such, but its all down to you.

My first point being, that you don't need to go for these new high end cards if you're using it just for the display. More memory does help at that resolution though.

I'd look for something like the GTS250 1024 version and save the money for the Dell U2410 instead :D (but then again, that would be a little over spec'd if you're not planning on gaming or using for much multimedia. Heck, go for the GTX260)

EDIT: if you've got a SG05/06 you've got problems with the nvidia cards, unless you get your saw out.

If you want to spend 100 - 120 the cards mentioned above ie gtx260 and ati 4890, are the cards you should be looking at. And actually after re-reading your initial post I too would reccomend the 4890 as watching movies is one of your uses for it, As these cards have the Avivo HD, 7.1 Surround Sound, which should give you plug and play audio over HDMI

Now if you want "lower than this" then you need to reduce what you are going to spend :)

I wouldnt reccomend the GTS250 1024mb as the guy above says though as although it does have a lot of RAM it only has a 256bit interface so doesnt make proper use of it

OK after re-reading the ops original post I agree with you on recommending the 4890 to this guy as it wil probably suit him better for the reason I stated above.

BUT in response to your statments here I have to disagree,

firstly - IT ISNT considerably faster at any resolution take a look here at a comparisson benchmark, http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...compare,1450.html?prod[2674]=on&prod[2702]=on

Second - yes it does have more RAM but I think you would only notice this at extreme levels of eye candy and so the op definitely wouldnt notice.

Third - DX10.1 support as you say very minor indeed

and finally - has a cooler that exhausts outside the case (though it is noisier).
Well of course it does . . . . . . along with nearly every other current GPU ? ? ?

yes HD4890, as you can't agrue its price, I don't watch DVDs so I m not really into what ATI give you over the Nvida onces, all I care about is price and performance in game.

and yes why bother with the GTX260 when A. it don't like 1200 res much(although there isnt much between it and the HD4870) B is slower than HD4890
 
the s2409w only does 1920x1080 so the 1200 issue wont be there. It may be that i will play the odd game but my gaming is done on my xbox360.

If i can last with the 1950pro i have for now, i will. I don't want to spend for the sake of it, but if i'm going to buy a new card, i'll do what i normally do and set the budget i have and it will last me ages then.

the cheaper of the cards i listed above is reported to have a fan which doesn't exhaust the heat. With the case i have, it's important i have this.

If the noise get's really bad, i'll have to bite the bullet and go for an after market cooler
 
The powercolor ATI 4890 on offer at OCUK atm you really can't grumble with at the moment. Buck for bang it really does pwn.

Having said that if you aren't gaming why spend £100+- on a card? Just get a cheaper £60 one or something?

If you do want the ability for good graphical stuff, go for the ATI. I ordered mine from OcUK yesterday morning with next day delivery because wednesday night my Nvidia 8800GTS died. I am now sat with the box on my desk gratefully recieved and wet with anticipation of getting it home and testing crysis, etc :D

You can also adjust fan speeds on the ATI, it handles well on 24" and although quieter you could always see what its like and get a custom cooler on for a small bit more if it REALLY annoys you.
