i replaced my old lga775 mobo with a 1155 mpb for my new i5 cpu on will i have to do a clean install of os for this mobo? if so can i use linux? even though i had win7 pro installed before?

You should do a clean install but you might be able to get away without. You can use Linux. Do you want to install it over the Win7 installation or side by side?

Side by side? Id rather use win7, but i had to go with linux as i cant afford win7 i bought a pc with win7 installed so i dont have the installation disc or anything :/

  1. Download the ISO for whichever version of Windows 7 you are licensed for.
  2. Burn it to a DVD or create a bootable USB Flash Drive using this.
  3. Install Windows 7
To elaborate on what KIA said. If you originally purchased an OEM Windows license with your previous motherboard, you would need to buy another Windows license to stay 100% legal, unless that is, your old motherboard died. :)

Here's what Microsoft says on the matter...

An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a "new personal computer" to which Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created and the license of new operating system software is required. If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do NOT need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC. (Source)
