If I buy an upgrade copy of win7

1. Does it come with a valid key
2. Will this key allow me to install a fresh clean copy of win7 onto a brand new HDD/SSD with no problems of it not having windows on before.
3. Will it validate with no problems so I can game in piece :)

Yes you can do a fresh install with upgrade media but to be correctly licensed you still need a qualifying OS to upgrade from (albiet not literally)

So what you are saying is that I cannot just buy the upgrade a new hard drive and install as usual assuming that the upgrade thinks I have no windows on the hard drive. I have a winxp key somewhere. I've seen some stories of people just using the upgrade as a normal full install copy

What he said was exactly what you want.

You CAN do a fresh install on a new hard drive, however, technically it's only a legal install if you own an old copy of windows too.

Just so you know, most people can get away with just using the disk as regular install disk, whereas some need to do a 'double install' (recommended by MS) or a registry hack (faster but not recommended) to make the activation work correctly

But technically, why would you spend money on something when you could be equally illegal 'acquiring' the whole thing for free.

If you're buying anything, then presumably you're doing so to be 'legal'. Why would you then negate that by not having a licence key for a previous version.
