Need a definitive answer, pls help.

What is the difference between the X3230 2.66GHz / 2x4MB 1066FSB and the Dual Core Xeon 3070, 2.66GHz / 2MB 1066FSB processor and what is better?

We have a Dell Poweredge 840 and these are the two processors offered for upgrade that are of any benefit.

Thing is the price is ridiculous and I'm assuming that I could use a Q6600.

Or, why could I not use the Intel Quad-Core Xeon X3220 (as opposed to their offering of the X3230).

Just need some clarification here if poss.

dont know too much about intel's xeons, but i do know that the q6600 is an excellent cpu, and you would be far better off getting of those than spending huge amounts of a 'high-end' cpu.

edit: Both those CPU's are S775, so you might as well buy the Q6600.

Well the difference between the first two is that the former is the 775 Xeon version of the Q6700 (still a great CPU), and the latter is the 775 Xeon version of the E6700 (somewhat old-hat now, considering that we're two generations ahead of it now).

I see no reason why you couldn't use an X3220 or a Q6600.

The E6700 is a 65nm dual core chip that was replaced by the E6750 (also 65nm). 65nm chips are still for sale, but there are newer 45nm chips out.

The Q6700 is a 65nm quad core chip. There are now 45nm quad cores out, but they are more expensive. You don't hear a lot about the Q6700 though, because the Q6600 is very good value for money, not many people bought Q6700s for whatever reason.
