Need A Drive For Backing Up.

Hi,

Owing to my recent misfortune of having lost all my data (motherboard has wiped two different solid state drives now), I am on the look out for an additional drive to use as a backup for my Samsung Evo (as well as a new motherboard).

I'll freely admit I have very little experience at all of backing up data - a memory stick has been sufficient until now, but losing everything twice in close succession has made me think differently.

I do have a second ssd, a Crucial M4 128gb, and this I am considering using as my backup. However, my Evo is 250gb, and although I doubt I'll have it loaded to near its full capacity, I can't help but feel that using a 'smaller' drive could be a hindrance?

So, do I use the M4, or would buying a second Evo make sense? Or, what about an external drive. Could someone provide some opinions on those, too?

Thanks. :)

Typically you're not looking for the same performance level for a backup drive, you want reliability and possibly low noise/power.

I'm a WD man all the way myself as I've never had a problem with them but everyone has their own experiences.

Either way, an SSD is a VERY expensive option for a backup drive, better off with a mechanical imo.

Only if you intend to move data between systems.

The problem with external drives is that the data transfer is slow - even over Firewire/USB3 - compared to an internal drive.

Ok, thanks. I've never had more than one drive in a system at any one time, so I'm assuming that I'll have to raid (one hdd + ssd)?

No, RAID is for multiple drives of the same capacity/type for performance and/or redundancy.

If you're just going to add the 2nd drive to backup data from the first one just install it as normal.

I've never used the WD Blue drives so can't really comment.

But for another £14 you can double your storage andd increase performance to the WD Black 500GB.

I have the 4TB version of that drive and can't fault it so far :)

Yeah, I was looking at the black, too (I also like WD thus far. I had a 150gb Velociraptor a few years back, and that was pretty nippy and reliable). I just thought that since my evo ssd is only 250gb, it might be a waste?

I've always found whatever disk space I have I use up somehow

But it's up to you really. The 250GB will cover your SSD data, you could always use the additional space for music/movies etc?

Also looking at the caviar green as well. I assume they are just slightly more power efficient? They appear to the same in every other respect, though the spin speed says 'IntelliPower'.

Mate just get an external drive and backup your SSD FFS lol

Any will do...speed is not an issue for Backups.

I backed up my Home videos and photos shares from my server to a 2TB usb drive for 5 years and it worked 100%

It really doesn't need this level of discussion lol :p

If your PC blows up then the chances are any USB drive will not be affected. But it may if its inside plugged into the mobo plus you can take it offsite when you go on holiday etc...leave it at a relatives house etc...
