Hi

I've never really got into final fantasy the main game series, I sunk a few hours into 7 and was disappointed in 8, so I've never really looked at the game series in much details. Final Fantasy Tactics is a different matter. :)

Well I've decided to get a few of the old games for ps/ps 2 and I've ran into Final Fantasy Origins and Final Fantasy Anthology. Which from the sound if it the older games are far better than the newer games with ff7 making in mainstream for the western market and it all went down hill from that.

Final Fantasy Origins is easy to understand.. its just FF1 and FF2 remade. Final Fantasy Anthology; is where it got confusing for me. The UK pal version is 4 and 5.. while the US version has 5 and 6 right? But what I heard is that some of the games got re-titled between converting from Japan and US..

So really the question is, are the two games on the UK PAL version Final Fantasy Anthology, the same two games that's on the US NTSC version of the game?

Thanks in advance. :)

Essentially, Final Fantasy 1 got a worldwide release, so was known everywhere as Final Fantasy, naturally. But Final Fantasy 2 & 3 didn't. Final Fantasy 4 did get a worldwide release, but because 2 & 3 didn't, it was called 4 in japan and 2 in the USA. Again, 5 was japan only, 6 was US as well, and became Final Fantasy 3 over there.
And then Final Fantasy 7 came out, the publishers decided this naming thing was stupid, it was called final fantasy 7 everywhere, lots of americans got very confused wondering what happened to final fantasies 4-6, and eventually they all got re-released as part of various packs with the correct names.

But as you say, the weirdness doesn't end there. The Anthology in the US is 5 and 6, while in the EU it is 4 and 5. Because America. Over here, 6 was released on its own.

We didn't get a Final Fantasy until 7.

As for the games to play I'd say 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. I'd also say give VIII another go but that's just because I love it :p.

Give 8 another try, it's very different to number 7 which is odd at first.
However, it ends up being a marvellous game

The thing with most of the FF's for that matter is you need to put time into them to open up and becoming interesting. Playing any FF for "a few hours" isn't good enough. You need to sink at least ~8-15 hours in to see the story progress.

But the whole numbering system for anything before FF7 is screwed up. I'm glad at 7 they decided ok look just make 7 worldwide and continue numbering them up from there.

And then of course, another exception is 11 and 14 being the MMO games which I personally would've preferred they didn't do this.

You should just play VII like everyone else did.

I just read his post again, I thought he'd played FF7 properly.

Play FF7 again, it's very unlikely you'll be disappointed.

I'd say get up to the Chocobo races (maybe even Kalm) to see if you like it.
Does everyone else agree?

Yeah if you are still in Midgar and gave up already, don't. You still got a lot of ways to go. At least move onto the next town i.e. Kalm Town, to get a sense of the bigger picture.

I started on 7 when it was first released, and I think I go back at least once a year and put in another 100 hours of starting it again. There are so many different techniques to try in defeating certain bosses/weapons in the game! I then went on to 8 and 9, then worked my way back through 1 to 6 and finally caught up to 13-2 now. some are more tedious than others, but you should def go back and play 7!
