Need a good media server software

I'm looking for some media server software I can use to stream music from ym desktop to my Denon CEOL Piccolo amp.

Anyone have any idea what software is best, want it to play FLAC files.

Best option would be to custom build but it depends on budget, space needed and if you want to get your hands dirty with OS

Cant I just install some software on my main PC for the amp to stream the music from that PC?

Can't you just connect an optical cable or similar into it from your PC? That would be by far the easiest, then you just use whatever playback software you normally use.

I could do I guess, won't it sound better if the amp is streaming it though?

That is streaming though, whether it's via Wi-Fi, Ethernet network or optical cable, it's all digital. You're passing digital audio data to the Denon to convert into analogue signal, then actual sound.

It's just a case of which is more convenient for you to use. If the Denon is next to the PC, then you might as well just use optical. Wi-Fi or Ethernet to your network makes sense if the distance is much more and optical is less feasible.
